Artist’s statement

Cryogenesis – life from the ice

Since the dawn of the industrial revolution, we humans have dealt great damage to our environment, and consequently the species that exist within it. In fact we are experiencing the 6th mass extinction event (the 5th saw the end of the dinosaurs), with a huge increase in the number of species extinct and endangered, during our lifetimes, and as a direct result of our modern lifestyles.

Efforts have been underway for many years to conserve and preserve those species of flora and fauna most endangered – one such effort is the ‘Frozen Ark’, which aims to preserve the DNA and living cells of endangered species, to retain the genetic knowledge for the future. But, could these efforts be futile if the environment they once thrived in is never the same again? Will we ever address the real issues, or are we predestined to suffer enormously from these mass extinctions? Have we in fact, already accepted our fate?

This series explores the question of using cryopreservation as a method of preserving and then giving life, in a world that is increasingly hostile to its inhabitants. It speaks of irony, futility, and desperation, but also hope.

To create the work I have frozen sliced shells in blocks of ice, and thawed them to varying degrees to achieve the effects you see. This small series took many weeks and failures to arrive at the finished result. They were photographed with a macro lens in diffuse daylight.

This is a very personal series of work – I took my inspiration from my daughter, who began her life in cryopreservation while we went through fertility treatment – without which she would not be here today.
