Are you sitting on a BHAG?

That is, a Big, Hairy, Audacious Goal.

BHAGs are great! They give us meaning and something to strive for, and it feels amazing when you achieve them. Think about the last big goal you achieved – what was it? Do you remember how you felt when you nailed it? So. Damn. Good.

But right now, you’re sitting on another BHAG. You’ve been thinking about this goal for ages and you’ve also been thinking you should probably do something about it.

You’ll start on it, soon right?

You genuinely want to get started, but every time you try, something gets in the way. In fact every time you think about doing something related to the BHAG something else seems to come up, or for some reason or another (perhaps there are many), you haven’t moved forward.

BHAGs aren’t comfortable to sit on… for long

Yes BHAGs are awesome to have but if we sit on them for too long they can make life quite uncomfortable. On a small scale you might just feel like you’ve constantly forgotten to do something – like leaving the house and forgetting to turn off your straighteners – it niggles at you, always in the back of your mind.

At the more extreme end, BHAGs you just sit on and never do anything about can make you feel quite crap about yourself. Because you’re not fulfilling your biggest desires. And you know it.

What’s stopping you?

Take a minute right now, to write down the reasons you haven’t made any progress on your BHAG – for just a few minutes, write down everything that comes to mind.

Once you’ve written your list, you’re going to take a look at each reason, and you’re going to give yourself a little encouragement.

Give yourself a pep talk

For example:

I tried before and I failed
Self-pep: What can I learn from my failure to help me succeed this time?

I don’t have any support
Self-pep: It’s good to acknowledge that I feel unsupported right now, what do I need? Who or what can help me?

I might injure myself, I injure myself every time I start training!
Self-pep: Great well I know to take it more slowly, and perhaps I’ll get some coaching this time

People will judge me
Self-pep: People will judge me anyway. What’s the worst that could happen?

Clear the obstacles so that you can start moving, today

Acknowledging the reasons you have for not moving forward, and clearing them with a little self-pep-talking is a very effective way to get things moving. Often we don’t work through these worries* and they just stand there, in our way, unquestioned. But once you start questioning them they instantly begin to diminish. You shine a big ol’ light on their dark souls and they shrivel and squeal like a balloon being let down. *a.k.a. Your shadow

How do you feel now?

Now that you’ve acknowledged some of the things that have been holding you back, and cleared them, how do you feel? Does it seem more possible that you could achieve this Big Hairy Audacious Goal of yours?

I have great news! There is now nothing stopping you from getting up off that BHAG right now, and taking a single step forward.

So take action

Then pick one.

And do it. Yup right now.
